Team building for small teams of 10 to 30
Why small-group corporate events cost more per person in the UAE, what minimum chargeable persons really means, and the formats that work best under 30 people.
If you are organising something for a team of 10 to 30 people, you have probably noticed that the per-person prices look worse than the ones in every article written for larger companies. That is not a mistake and it is not a penalty. It is arithmetic, and understanding it changes what you should book.
Why small groups cost more per person
Most of what you are paying for does not scale with group size.
A 50-seat coach costs the same with 12 people on it. A venue hire fee is a venue hire fee. A photographer works a half day whether they photograph 15 people or 80. A coordinator runs the day either way. A caterer has a minimum order. An MC does not charge by the head.
Add those up and you get a fixed cost that is then divided by however many people attend. That is the entire explanation:

Minimum chargeable persons, explained honestly
There is a floor below which a price band stops covering its own delivered cost, and every supplier knows where theirs is. The difference between suppliers is whether they tell you before or after you sign.
A private dhow evening published at “AED 620 per person for 10–29 people” is billed in our catalog at a minimum of 27 people — because the vessel charter, the crew, the catering minimum and the coach do not shrink for a group of 12. We print that number on the package page.
What this means practically: at 12 people, that AED 620 “per person” price is really 27 × 620, or about AED 16,700 — roughly AED 1,390 each. That is not a trap if you know it in advance. It is a trap if you find out at invoice.
Ask every supplier, in writing: what is the minimum you will bill for this at our group size? Their willingness to answer is more informative than the answer.
What small groups should actually book
The good news is that some of the best formats in the catalog are better at 12 people than at 60, and they are not the expensive ones.
A cooking challenge. Teams cook against each other and then eat it. At 20 people everyone is in one kitchen and one conversation; at 60 it becomes three separate events happening in parallel. AED 510 at 20–29, AED 430 at 30–59. Four hours.
A facilitated half day. Four and a half hours in a private venue with a facilitator. Small groups are where facilitation actually works — above about 25 people a discussion becomes a series of statements. AED 530 at 16–29, AED 470 at 30–47.
A culture and food itinerary. Old Dubai — Al Fahidi, the Creek, the Deira souks — five and a half hours for 15 to 40 people. AED 350 at 15–29, AED 300 at 30–40. Walking itineraries genuinely suit small groups; at 50 people they become a crowd being marshalled.
A day on the water. Seven hours offshore, 12 to 40 people: AED 950 at 12–19, AED 850 at 20–29, AED 780 at 30–40.
A yacht, for a senior group. Six hours for 8 to 25 people. AED 3,200 at 8–11, AED 2,700 at 12–19, AED 2,400 at 20–25. This is the clearest example of fixed-cost arithmetic in the catalog — below 12 people it is punishing, at 25 it is a different proposition entirely.
A working retreat at a Northern Emirates farm. Eleven hours, 15 to 40 people, exclusive use of the property. AED 980 at 15–19, AED 870 at 20–34, AED 780 at 35+.
An onboarding sprint. If the reason for the day is that the small team is small because it is new. Eight hours at your own premises, 12 to 40: AED 660 at 12–19, AED 590 at 20–34.
What small groups should avoid
- A large-format games day. It needs 50 people minimum to work at all, and it is designed around scale.
- A ballroom event. Eighty people is the floor for a gala format. Fifteen people in a function room built for two hundred is a worse evening than fifteen people in a good restaurant.
- A family day. It starts at 100 attendees.
- Anything with an MC and a stage. At 15 people the person with the microphone is standing two metres from everybody.
The pattern is consistent: small groups should buy intimacy, not production. Production is what large groups need in order to feel like a single event. A group of fifteen already is one.
The three ways to get better value
1. Combine with another team. Two departments each running a 15-person day pay the fixed costs twice and both sit in the worst price band. One 30-person day usually crosses into a better band as well — the saving arrives from both directions and is frequently 30 to 40 per cent.
2. Choose formats with low fixed costs. A cooking studio, a private venue in Al Quoz or a walking itinerary carries far less fixed cost than a chartered vessel or a desert camp. That is why the cooking challenge is good value at 20 people and the yacht is not.
3. Drop the transfer if you can. A coach is a meaningful share of a small group’s fixed cost. If the venue is 20 minutes away and people drive, that money goes into the event instead. This does not work for an evening with drinks, and it should not.
