Corporate sports tournaments for UAE teams

Sport is the easiest team event to sell internally and one of the easiest to get wrong. Everyone agrees to it. A dozen people are genuinely excited. And unless the format is designed properly, those dozen spend the afternoon beating everyone else while the rest of the office stands at the side of the court.

This is how to run one where the whole room plays.

Pick a sport nobody has an unfair advantage at

The right sport for a company tournament is one most people have tried and nobody plays seriously. In the UAE that narrows the list quickly.

Padel. The sport half of every Dubai office already argues about. Easy to start, playable within thirty minutes of coaching, mixed doubles works naturally, and a match can be timed to fifteen minutes. The best all-round choice for a mixed office.

Indoor cricket. The sport a large share of the UAE’s workforce grew up with, which makes it the most culturally resonant choice for many companies — and the one where the skill gap is widest. Perhaps a dozen people in an office of forty play regularly; a dozen have never held a bat. Workable, but only with the format rules below.

Multi-sport. For fifty people or more, a single sport stops working: there are not enough courts, and too many people are waiting. A games day with several disciplines running at once — relays, tug of war and an obstacle course, then bracketed football, cricket, volleyball and badminton — keeps everyone moving, because nobody has to be good at all of them.

Football, basketball and running races are best avoided as the only event. They reward fitness and youth, and they are the sports where the gap between the best and worst in the room is most visible.

The four format rules

These are what separate a tournament people remember from one they quietly avoid next year.

1. A seeded, published draw. Teams are mixed across departments and seniority, and the strongest players are spread so that no team is stacked. Publish the draw before the day — people arrive knowing who they play, and the conversation starts in the office a week early.

2. Coaching before scoring. Thirty minutes of coaching, split by ability, before a single point counts. This is the inclusion policy. It is what gets the people who have never played onto the court at all, rather than volunteering to keep score.

3. Short, timed matches. Fifteen minutes on a padel court, eight overs on a cricket pitch. Short matches mean more of them, more rotation, and no game decided in the first five minutes by one strong player.

4. A plate competition. Teams knocked out of the main draw drop into a second competition and keep playing. Without it, a team eliminated at 16:20 stands around until 17:30 — which is the moment the day stops being team building.

Then a final, on one court, with everyone else watching. That is the moment the afternoon becomes a story people tell.

What it costs

Per person, excluding 5% VAT.

The padel bands are AED 490 at 16–23, AED 420 at 24–47, AED 370 at 48 or more. Cricket is AED 440 at 24–39, AED 380 at 40–69, AED 340 at 70 or more. The games day is AED 620 at 50–99, AED 480 at 100–199, AED 400 at 200 or more.

People sometimes ask why a padel tournament costs more than four court bookings. A court is AED 200–320 an hour and most of the office knows it. At AED 420 a person for thirty-two people, the courts are about a quarter of what is paid. The rest is what turns four bookings into an event: the draw, the coaching, the referee, the plate, the lunch and the trophy.

Timing

Weekday afternoons. Indoor courts and pitches are empty and cheap between about 13:00 and 17:00 on a weekday, and padel courts in that window are typically half the evening rate. A tournament that takes the afternoon costs the business half a working day and costs nobody their weekend.

Summer is fine indoors. Padel and cricket both run in air-conditioned facilities, which makes them two of the easiest bookings in the catalog for a July date. The outdoor games day is an October-to-April event only.

Ten days’ notice is enough for either indoor tournament. A company-wide games day needs thirty.

Make it an annual series

The strongest argument for a company tournament is not the day. It is the second one.

A tournament run once is an event. Run quarterly, with a perpetual trophy (AED 1,400, engraved) that sits on the winning team’s floor until the next round, it becomes a league — and a league gives people a reason to talk across departments for the whole year, not for one afternoon. A quarterly series of either tournament carries 12% off the annual value.

For people who will never enjoy a competitive format, the complement is a fitness programme rather than another match: a twelve-week beginner running programme ending in a company 5K runs AED 560 at 30–59, AED 490 at 60–149, AED 430 at 150 or more, and it is built for the people who have not run since school.

Kit

Two things catch people out. Indoor courts and pitches require non-marking soles, and a venue can refuse someone in the wrong shoes. And everyone needs a change of top.
